Polyester vs Nylon: Which Performance Fabric Is Right for You?

TLDR

Polyester wins on UV resistance (2x better than nylon), quick-dry performance, color fastness, and lower cost. Nylon wins on abrasion resistance (3x better), tensile strength, and elastic recovery. For outdoor exposure, choose polyester. For abrasion-prone applications like workwear and tactical gear, choose nylon.

Definition

Polyester (PET) is a synthetic fiber offering strength, quick-dry performance, UV resistance, and color fastness. Nylon (polyamide) offers superior abrasion resistance, elasticity, and toughness but is less UV resistant.

Problem

Your product design requires a synthetic fabric but you cannot decide between polyester and nylon. The wrong choice means premature failure, poor performance, or unnecessary cost.

Sådan virker det

Polyester is hydrophobic (repels water), dries quickly, and holds dye well with excellent UV resistance. It is the go-to fiber for sportswear, outdoor apparel, and sun-protective clothing. Nylon is hydrophilic (absorbs water), has 3x better abrasion resistance than polyester, and offers superior elastic recovery. It is preferred for workwear, tactical gear, and applications requiring extreme durability. The cost difference is significant: nylon costs 30-50% more than equivalent polyester.

Løsning

Choose 100% polyester for: sun-protective clothing, quick-dry sportswear, outdoor apparel, and applications requiring UV durability. Choose 100% nylon for: workwear, tactical gear, backpacks, and abrasion-prone applications. Choose polyester/nylon blends for a balance of properties.

Vores anbefaling

Seekingtex offers both pure polyester and nylon fabrics and custom blends. For sportswear and outdoor apparel, our polyester-based fabrics offer the best value. For workwear and tactical applications, our nylon fabrics provide superior durability.

Ofte stillede spørgsmål

Which fiber is more sustainable?

Both can be recycled. Recycled polyester (rPET) is widely available with GRS certification. Nylon recycling is less common but available.

Which fiber is more comfortable?

Polyester feels drier during activity due to its hydrophobic nature. Nylon feels softer against the skin but absorbs moisture.

Can they be blended?

Yes — polyester/nylon blends combine UV resistance (polyester) with abrasion resistance (nylon). Common blends: 65/35, 50/50.

Which dye better?

Polyester requires disperse dyes and higher temperatures (130°C). Nylon accepts acid dyes easily. Both achieve excellent color fastness with proper dyeing.
